How to Mulch Without Killing Grass Around the Bed
Edge cuts, tarp staging, blower cleanup — the install routine that leaves the lawn intact.
Mulching beds adjacent to lawn raises an obvious question: how do I keep mulch out of the grass without damaging either? This tutorial covers the techniques for maintaining clean transitions. Use our mulch calculator for bed volume.
Edge first, mulch second
Install a clean edge before applying new mulch. Spade edge (free, annual refresh) or hard edging (aluminum, steel, brick) prevents mulch from migrating into lawn.
Even temporary edging (landscape staples through a flexible barrier) is better than mulching against an unedged lawn.
Keep mulch low at the edge
Taper mulch depth from 3 inches in the bed center to 1 inch at the lawn edge. The taper prevents mulch from spilling over the edge during foot traffic or wind.
The visual effect actually looks more professional than a flat 3-inch layer to the edge.
Manage the mulch-into-lawn migration
If mulch ends up in the lawn (despite edging), use a leaf rake to drag it back into the bed. Don't bag it with grass clippings — wood chips clog mower blades.
Grass blades penetrating into the bed should be cut back with the edger or hand shears. They will not survive in mulch but will look ragged.
If you want to extend a bed (kill the grass)
Sheet mulching is the easiest method. Mow grass short. Layer cardboard or 5-7 sheets of newspaper. Apply 4-6 inches of mulch over the paper.
In 6-9 months, the grass underneath dies, the paper decomposes, and the bed is ready for planting. No herbicide needed.

Frequently asked questions
Will mulch kill grass it touches?+
Not in a few hours. Continuous contact over weeks can shade and kill grass, but the standard edge maintenance prevents this.
What is sheet mulching?+
Layering cardboard or newspaper under mulch to kill grass underneath. Takes 6-9 months for full die-off.
Do I need herbicide to extend a bed?+
No — sheet mulching kills grass without chemicals.
Will mulch in the lawn damage my mower?+
Wood chips can clog mower blades and discharge. Rake them back into the bed before mowing.
How tapered should the edge be?+
From 3 inches in bed center to 1 inch at the lawn edge. The taper looks more polished than a flat depth.
