5 Best Mulches for Acidic Soil (Hydrangeas, Azaleas, Blueberries)

Pine bark, pine straw, cypress, oak leaves, peat moss — what works and why.

Azaleas, blueberries, rhododendrons, camellias, and many other ornamentals thrive in acidic soil (pH 4.5-6.0). The right mulch can help maintain that pH while feeding plants. Here are 5 mulches that gently acidify soil over time. Use our mulch calculator for volume.

Top 5 acidifying mulches

1. Pine bark mulch (large or nugget) — the regional default for acid-loving plants. Gradually releases tannins that lower pH 0.2-0.5 units over 2-3 years.

2. Pine straw — the easiest mulch to apply, mildly acidifies, and the airy texture suits rhododendron and azalea root systems.

3. Sphagnum peat moss — strongly acidic (pH ~4); use as a thin amendment layer under pine bark, not as a stand-alone mulch.

4. Oak leaf mulch — shredded oak leaves are mildly acidic and free if you have oak trees. Compost first to prevent matting.

5. Cottonseed hulls — agricultural byproduct, mildly acidic, regional availability in the South.

How much pH change to expect

Acidifying mulches change pH gradually. A pine bark or pine straw mulch maintained at 3 inches will shift surface soil pH down 0.2-0.5 units over 2-3 years.

Don't expect dramatic changes — if your soil is pH 7.5 and you need 5.5, mulch alone won't get you there. Soil amendments (elemental sulfur, ammonium sulfate) are needed first.

Mulches that increase pH (avoid for acid lovers)

Hardwood mulch (oak excepted) tends to slightly raise pH as it decomposes — by 0.1-0.3 units. Not dramatic but not what acid-loving plants want.

Mushroom compost is strongly alkaline (often pH 7.5-8). Skip for acid-loving beds.

Combining mulch with soil amendment

Apply elemental sulfur (1-2 lbs per 100 sq ft) under fresh pine bark in fall. The sulfur lowers pH faster than mulch alone, and the pine bark maintains the change.

Test soil pH annually with an inexpensive meter. Target pH for blueberries is 4.5-5.5; azaleas/rhododendrons 5.0-6.0.

Frequently asked questions

Does pine mulch really acidify soil?+

Yes — gradually, by 0.2-0.5 pH units over 2-3 years in maintained 3-inch layers.

How fast does mulch change soil pH?+

Slowly. Expect 0.2-0.5 units over 2-3 years. Soil amendments (sulfur) are needed for faster changes.

Is hardwood mulch okay for azaleas?+

Not ideal — hardwood mildly raises pH. Pine bark or pine straw is the standard for azaleas and rhododendrons.

Can I use peat moss as mulch?+

As a thin amendment layer (1/2 inch) under pine bark, yes. Stand-alone peat mulch crusts and sheds water.

What pH do blueberries need?+

4.5-5.5. Use pine bark mulch plus annual sulfur amendments to reach and maintain.
