Hardwood vs Pine Bark Mulch: Which Lasts Longer and Why?

Shredded hardwood and pine bark nuggets are the two most popular mulch types in the United States, and they suit very different jobs. Hardwood is the workhorse for general landscape beds; pine bark is the long-lasting specialist for acid-loving plants and slopes that resist movement. Hardwood mulch overview

Shredded hardwood mulch is the most widely available landscape mulch in the country. It is produced by shredding hardwood tree branches and trunk wood into stringy fibers that lock together when raked into beds. The material lasts 12 to 18 months at functional depth before it decomposes into the soil layer below and requires refresh.

Hardwood works for almost any application: foundation beds, perennial gardens, tree rings, weed suppression in bare beds. The fibrous structure resists movement on slopes up to 20 percent grade and the natural color ranges from medium brown to dark brown depending on species mix. Dyed versions (black, brown, red) are widely available at 20 to 40 percent premium pricing.

Pine bark nuggets overview

Pine bark nuggets are chunks of bark from pine logs processed at sawmills, typically ranging from 1 inch (mini nuggets) to 4 inches (large nuggets). The material lasts 3 to 4 years at functional depth — two to three times the lifespan of shredded hardwood.

Pine bark slightly acidifies the soil as it decomposes, which is desirable for acid-loving plants (azaleas, blueberries, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, evergreens) and neutral or slightly negative for most other landscape plants. The chunky nuggets do not lock together on slopes — they float away in heavy rain or wash down driveways and walkways.

Decomposition rates compared

Hardwood decomposes 30 to 50 percent in the first year and 70 to 90 percent over two years. By year 2, most installations need full refresh. The decomposition rate is what makes hardwood a useful soil amendment — the breakdown adds organic matter to the soil annually.

Pine bark decomposes 10 to 15 percent in the first year and 40 to 60 percent over three years. The slow decomposition means longer functional life and less frequent refresh, but also less soil amendment value. Pine bark is the choice for low-maintenance beds; hardwood is the choice for soil-building beds.

Cost comparison

Hardwood pricing in 2026 US: bulk delivery $30 to $45 per cubic yard, bagged $3.50 to $5.50 per 2 cu ft. Annual cost of ownership: refresh every 12 to 18 months, so material cost per year is roughly 100 percent of install cost.

Pine bark pricing: bulk $35 to $55 per cubic yard, bagged $4 to $6 per 2 cu ft (large nuggets often cost more than fine bark). Annual cost of ownership: refresh every 3 to 4 years, so material cost per year is about 30 to 50 percent of hardwood at the same install depth.

Over a 10-year period for a 100 sq ft bed at 3-inch depth: hardwood costs $400 to $700 in material; pine bark costs $250 to $400. Pine bark wins on long-term cost but loses on visual freshness — faded pine bark looks faded for the years between refreshes.

Application differences

Foundation beds: hardwood for most styles; pine bark for evergreen-heavy plantings. Either works.

Tree rings: hardwood for most trees; pine bark for conifers and acid-loving species. Hardwood locks together better on slopes.

Slopes: hardwood. Pine bark nuggets float away in rain.

Pest behavior

Hardwood mulch attracts and supports a normal soil ecosystem: earthworms, beneficial nematodes, mycorrhizae, occasional millipedes and pill bugs. None are pest concerns.

Pine bark contains low levels of natural insect-repellent terpenes that mildly deter ants and some chewing insects. The effect is modest and should not be a primary selection criterion. Termite behavior is similar between the two — neither attracts termites from clean yards, but both can shelter existing colonies, which is why the 18-inch foundation buffer applies regardless of mulch type.
