September is the second-best mulch month after April. The temperatures moderate, soil is still warm enough for plant root activity, and the fall planting window opens. Why September is the second-peak install month
Soil temperatures at 4-inch depth typically still read 60-70°F in early September across zones 5-7 — warm enough for active root development, cool enough that mulch isn't drying out as fast as in July. Rainfall patterns are also more predictable, helping freshly installed material settle properly.
Most fall refreshes happen between September 15 and October 31. Earlier in September is better — gives plants time to establish before frost arrives, especially for fall-planted shrubs and perennials that benefit from immediate insulation around new root systems.
Target depths for fall application
Flower beds: 3 inches deep. Same as spring. Refresh thin spots to bring total depth back to target.
Tree rings: 3-4 inches over the root zone, with the same ANSI A300 tapering and dry-buffer requirements. Fall is a particularly good time to fix mulch volcanoes from past years.
Vegetable gardens: 1-2 inches of straw or compost if you have fall crops growing. Skip mulching after the final harvest until next spring.
Pathways: 4-6 inches of coarse wood chips. Fall refresh sets up clean paths for winter use and prevents mud accumulation.
Combining mulch with fall planting
Plant first, mulch second. New shrubs and perennials need 2-4 weeks of root establishment before being mulched over. Mark planting areas with stakes so the mulch crew (or you) knows to leave a 6-inch clear ring around each plant.
Bulbs are the exception — plant bulbs and immediately mulch over them. The mulch protects the bulbs through winter and the spring shoots will push through easily in March-April.
Bulk delivery scheduling
September is the second-peak delivery month after April. Most yards book 1-2 weeks out by mid-September; by late September, delivery may be 2-3 weeks out. Reserve early.
October is the off-peak fall window — same pricing as September, often better availability. If you can wait until early October, you get easier scheduling and the same product quality.
