Three myths about rubber mulch — fact-checked
Before any purchase decision, sort the noise from the data. The three claims below dominate the residential-mulch conversation, and each has a different answer.

Where rubber actually wins — and where it loses
Rubber mulch has a few defensible use cases and several important tradeoffs. Compare the exact product's certification, installed quote, maintenance needs, and removal plan rather than assuming it will save money.
- WIN — certified playground applications: use the exact product's ASTM F1292 critical-fall-height rating and certified installation and maintenance depth
- WIN — dog runs: doesn't get muddy, doesn't harbor parasites the way wood chips can, easy to hose off urine
- WIN — high-traffic accent zones: around mailboxes, under spigots, in narrow side paths where wood compresses fast
- LOSE — vegetable garden beds: recycled-rubber composition and long-term soil effects vary, so use an organic mulch intended for food-growing areas instead
- LOSE — heat-stressed perennial beds in hot, exposed sites: rubber can add unwanted heat around sensitive plants
- LOSE — short-term landscape installs: high removal costs and uncertain local resale value can make rubber a poor fit when the site may change soon
Rubber mulch products marketed for playground use must be tested to ASTM F1292 at the manufacturer's stated installed depth; HIC and peak-g thresholds are evaluated at the equipment's critical fall height, not at a generic depth.

Disposal and end-of-life
Rubber mulch is the only landscape surface with a serious end-of-life problem. EWF biodegrades into soil; rubber does not. When the binder fails and fragments migrate, you have a remediation job — not a cleanup.
- Inspect routinely for migration, contamination, exposed substrate, and product breakdown; top up only as the manufacturer directs.
- Before removal, ask the local solid-waste or tire-recycling program whether it accepts the exact material and how it must be prepared.
- If soil contamination is suspected, use a qualified local laboratory or environmental professional to choose tests and interpret results; do not rely on a universal threshold copied from a landscaping page.
- Remove and transport the material under local rules, then select a replacement surface appropriate to the site and intended use.
