Three documents you need before you pour a bag

Playground surfacing may be reviewed against CPSC guidance, applicable ASTM standards, product test documentation, and local or owner requirements. Confirm the documents required for the specific site before ordering material.

Fall height drives depth — not the other way around

ASTM F1292 grades a surfacing system by its tested "critical fall height." Required depth varies by material, product, substrate, and equipment fall height, so a generic depth cannot establish compliance.

Engineered wood fiber, loose-fill rubber, and unitary surfaces are rated as product systems. Use the current product documentation and its ASTM F1292 critical-fall-height rating rather than assuming that one material name or nominal depth is sufficient.

Calculating use-zone area (where the mulch actually has to be)

The CPSC handbook defines use zones by equipment type. The surfacing footprint is not limited to the area directly under the equipment, so calculate it from the current handbook and the equipment manufacturer's layout.

  1. Measure the equipment footprint (length × width of the structure itself)
  2. Add 6 ft to each side for stationary use zone
  3. For swings: add 2× the chain length to the front and back use zones
  4. For slides > 4 ft tall: add 4 ft beyond the slide exit (CPSC §5.3.4)
  5. Sum total area, then × compacted depth, then × the 1.25 install factor for settlement

Inspection and refill cadence

Safety work does not end at installation. Follow the surface manufacturer's inspection and maintenance schedule and the current CPSC handbook; displaced, contaminated, compacted, or depleted loose fill may no longer perform like the tested system.

  • Daily/weekly: rake high-wear zones (slide exit, swing landing, climber base) back to spec depth
  • Monthly: measure depth at 4 fixed marker stakes; log readings
  • Quarterly: full visual inspection per ASTM F1487 checklist
  • Annually: top-dress to nominal install depth; retest HIC at 3 random points if commercial
  • Every 5–7 years: complete EWF removal and replacement (fiber breakdown reduces attenuation regardless of depth)

Frequently asked questions

What depth of mulch for a playground?+

It varies by material and product. Use a current ASTM F1292 test report or certified product specification whose critical fall height meets or exceeds the equipment fall height, then install and maintain the product at its stated depth.

How much mulch for a 484 sq ft play area?+

Use the installed depth certified for the exact product and equipment fall height under ASTM F1292. Enter that depth and 484 sq ft in the calculator, then follow the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions.

Rubber or wood for playgrounds?+

Either can be appropriate when the exact product system has an ASTM F1292 rating that meets the equipment fall height. Compare current product prices, certified installation requirements, inspection, refill or repair needs, warranty terms, and eventual disposal.

Where can I get engineered wood fiber?+

Use a supplier that can provide current product identification, ASTM F2075 documentation, and an ASTM F1292 report for the installed system. Verify the paperwork, installation instructions, and maintenance requirements before ordering; a generic "playground mulch" label is not test documentation.

Can wood mulch or wood chips be used as playground surfacing?+

Yes, when the exact installed surface is appropriate for the equipment. The 2025 CPSC handbook includes non-CCA wood mulch and wood chips among loose-fill options, but requires impact testing before or after installation when the material was not already tested for sale. Verify that the installed system's ASTM F1292 critical fall height meets or exceeds the equipment fall height; products sold as engineered wood fiber should also comply with ASTM F2075.

How long does playground mulch last?+

There is no universal interval. Inspect and maintain the surface to the product specification, and replace or repair it when it no longer meets the certified depth, condition, or impact-performance requirements.

What about the use zone for swings?+

Use the swing-specific geometry in the current CPSC handbook together with the equipment manufacturer's layout. Measure the full required zone before calculating volume; do not assume the footprint ends beneath the swing seats.

Do I need IPEMA certification for a home playground?+

IPEMA certification is voluntary for residential use, but third-party certification can make the product's ASTM F1292 rating easier to verify. Check applicable local requirements and retain the product test report and installation instructions.
