Bags vs bulk

Bagged vs Bulk Mulch Calculator

“Buy in bulk, it's always cheaper” is only half true. Bagged mulch has no delivery fee and no minimum order; bulk mulch is cheaper per cubic yard but often carries a flat delivery charge and a minimum you may not need. Where the two lines cross depends on your project size and your local prices. This calculator does that math for you — enter both prices and it returns each total, the winner, and the break-even volume.

How the break-even works

Bagged cost scales linearly with volume: every extra cubic yard is another ~13.5 bags of 2 cu ft. Bulk cost is a lower per-yard price plus a one-time delivery fee. For small projects the delivery fee dominates and bags win; as the project grows, the per-yard saving on bulk eventually pays back the delivery fee. The crossover — the break-even — is the delivery fee divided by how much you save per cubic yard by going bulk.

A typical result: with 2 cu ft bags at $4.50 and bulk at $45/yd plus an $80 delivery fee, bulk pulls ahead at roughly 5 cubic yards. Below that, bags are cheaper; above it, bulk. Your numbers will differ — which is exactly why you should enter your own.

What changes the answer

  • Delivery fee. The single biggest factor for small jobs. A free or cheap local delivery moves the break-even down; a $100+ fee pushes it up past most home projects.
  • Minimum bulk order. If the yard won't deliver less than 3 cubic yards and you only need 1.5, you pay for mulch you can't use — often erasing the bulk saving.
  • Sales tax. Applied to both, so it rarely changes the winner, but it changes the totals you actually pay.
  • Hauling it yourself. Picking up bulk in a truck skips the delivery fee entirely, but a pickup bed holds only about 2–3 cubic yards heaped.

자주 묻는 질문

Is bulk mulch always cheaper?+

No. Per cubic yard, bulk is almost always cheaper — but the delivery fee and minimum order can wipe that out on a small project. Below the break-even (often around 5 cubic yards once delivery is included), bagged mulch usually costs less overall.

How much is a delivery fee?+

It varies widely by region and distance, commonly $50–$120 flat for a residential bulk drop. Because it's a fixed cost, it matters most on small orders — enter your supplier's actual fee to get a real comparison.

How many bags equal a cubic yard?+

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet: 13.5 bags of 2 cu ft, or 9 bags of 3 cu ft. That's the conversion the bagged side of this calculator uses before applying your price per bag.
