A month-by-month mulching calendar
Vegetable mulch timing tracks soil temperature, not the calendar date. A 4-inch soil probe ($12 at any nursery) tells you more than the forecast. Pull mulch off cool-season beds in early spring to let the sun warm the soil, then re-mulch once your warm-season transplants are 6 inches tall.

University of Maryland Extension recommends waiting until soil temperature at 4 inches depth reaches 60°F (15°C) for warm-season vegetables before applying mulch, to avoid trapping cool soil and slowing root activity.
Why vegetables use 1–2 inches, not 3
Ornamental shrubs sit in mulch for 5–10 years and tolerate 3-inch layers. Annual vegetables get pulled and replanted yearly, and most are direct-seeded or transplanted as 4–6 inch starts. A 3-inch hardwood blanket physically blocks bean cotyledons, traps the cool spring soil that lettuce and spinach need to germinate, and shelters slugs that defoliate seedlings overnight.

- Transplanted warm-season crops (tomato, pepper, squash): mulch 1 week after planting, once roots have anchored

Fresh wood chips deserve a footnote. Penn State Extension and WSU research both confirm that chips applied on the surface do not pull nitrogen from the root zone — the nitrogen drawdown happens only in the top quarter inch of soil contact. Tilling fresh chips into a bed will stunt crops for a full season; top-dressing them around mature tomatoes will not.
Worked example: a 4 × 8 ft raised bed
For comparison, the same 32 sq ft mulched with aged compost at 1 inch needs 2.67 cu ft (about 4 bagged cubic feet of compost at $5–$8 per bag, or one wheelbarrow load of homemade compost). Compost doubles as a slow-release fertilizer, so it replaces a side-dress feeding in June.
Fall and winter mulch for next year's harvest
October mulching is where most gardeners under-invest. A 4-inch shredded-leaf or straw blanket on cleared beds prevents soil erosion through winter rains, feeds soil biology, and produces about a half inch of new humus by April — measurable as crumb structure in a fistful test.
- Pull spent plants but leave roots in place (carbon contribution, slow decomposition)
- Top-dress 1 inch of aged compost
- Layer 3–4 inches of shredded leaves or chopped straw
- Water once to set the layer; do not till
- In March, rake mulch into paths so soil can warm
Garlic and shallot beds need the opposite of bare wintering — plant cloves in October, then mulch heavily with 4–6 inches of straw immediately. Cornell Cooperative Extension's garlic trials report measurably larger bulb size at harvest from straw-mulched beds compared to bare-soil controls in zones 5 and 6.
