Mulch prices vary by region, type, and quantity, but US 2026 averages cluster within a predictable band. The figures below come from our spring 2026 price survey across Home Depot, Lowes, and 22 independent landscape yards. Add 8–10% sales tax depending on state.

Regional price variation
Regional differences run as much as 45% on the same product. Wood-supply geography drives most of it — Atlanta and Charlotte sit next to working mills, while Denver and Phoenix truck mulch hundreds of miles.
- Southeast (Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville): Bulk hardwood $28–$38/yd — the cheapest US region thanks to nearby pine and hardwood mills.
- Midwest (Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis): $32–$42/yd. Strong municipal compost programs offer free wood chips as an alternative.
- Northeast (Boston, NYC, Philly): $40–$55/yd. Higher labor and delivery costs.
- Mountain West (Denver, SLC): $48–$65/yd. Limited local mills; long-haul freight.
- West Coast (Seattle, Portland, Bay Area): $42–$60/yd. Eco-premium markets favor cedar and arborist chips.
The break-even: bulk vs bagged
- Per cubic foot bagged: $4.50 ÷ 2 cu ft = $2.25/cu ft.
- Per cubic foot bulk (material only): $40 ÷ 27 cu ft = $1.48/cu ft. A 34% per-cu-ft saving.
- Add the delivery fee. $60 fee ÷ ($2.25 − $1.48) = 78 cu ft = 2.9 cu yd. Above 3 cu yd, bulk wins decisively.
- Free-delivery thresholds. Many yards waive the fee at 5 cu yd. Worth pooling with neighbors if you are close to the cutoff.
Hidden costs and budget by project size
- Delivery fees. $50–$100 for orders under 3 cu yd. Some yards waive at 5+ cu yd.
- Sales tax. 0% (Oregon, Montana) to 9.5% (Tennessee, California). Average ~7%.
- Truck bed tarp. $15–$25 if hauling yourself — fines for unsecured loads run $100+ in most states.
- Steel or plastic edging. $20–$50 per 50 ft. Worth it for clean mulch boundaries.
- Weed fabric. $30–$60 per 100 sq ft. Skip in perennial beds (blocks self-seeding); use in foundation strips.
- Installation labor. $35–$75 per cu yd installed if hiring a landscaper. Doubles total project cost.
